Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brothers to dwell together in unity!
It is like the precious oil upon the head,
Coming down upon the beard,
Even Aaron's beard,
Coming down upon the edge of his robes.
It is like the dew of Hermon
Coming down upon the mountains of Zion,
For there, the Lord commanded the blessing—life forever.
Psalm 133
Commanded Blessing
How good and pleasant it is for brothers to dwell in unity! (Some versions read harmony.)
Unity is beautiful because it exists to get things done,
It is impossible to have unity without diversity!
We are left with uniformity without diversity, and uniformity has very little creative power or beauty.
It is the same with harmony.
It takes more than one note to have harmony in music, and it is created when everyone is singing in the same key.
In this example, it would be the key the Holy Spirit is leading.
Lastly, this is a place of commanded blessing.
What a promise!
What God commands, He will work.
For it is God Who works in us to will and do of His good pleasure, and His good pleasure is that we would love others as He has loved us.
To love others as a community, we need to be bonded in the unity of His love.
How have you thought of unity as simply 'getting along'?
How might you have excluded others because of diversity?
Who can you reconcile with that will lead to unity in His body?
Where in your community do you see diversity existing in the unity of purpose?
Lord, may we see your Kingdom among us. We desire Jesus-centered transformation in our community preceded by your commandment of love for one another as you have loved us. Amen
