“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” Matthew 7:24-27 ESV
Foundations Matter
We don’t rise to the occasion...we revert to our training.
We are not told what the house was built from, perhaps because we are diverse, and the foundation is the real issue.
Our houses will look different!
Thought: In what ways do you compare your house to others?
We also read that the storms of life come to us all.
Thought: Why do we think that nothing terrible will ever happen to us just because we are His children?
Knowing they will come, we are to build in preparation for the storms.
Thought: How have you prepared for things that are unknown and unseen?
Regardless of how well the house is built, it depends on the foundation.
Thought: What have you built your life upon? Family? Success? Financial wealth? Reputation?
It doesn't matter how many self-improvement seminars we attend, our good deeds, or our great intentions; we will not survive when the tragedies of this life blow in without His foundation.
Why?
Because without His foundation of hope, no lasting purpose can be found.
We end up asking, “Is this it?”
"Everyone then who hears these words." This statement proceeds over three chapters and starts with, "Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him."
We cannot wait until the storms come and try to "rise to the occasion".
We come now, live in His abiding presence, and learn of Him daily.
Lord, may we answer that you are the foundation for our life. Find us faithfully, building our lives on You. Amen
