But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control; against such things, there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 NASB
Fruitful Self-Control
"Self-control is not control by oneself through one's willpower but rather a control of oneself through the power of the Holy Spirit.” Jerry Bridges
Self-control is part of the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
It is His presence living within us.
Without His help, we are helpless as a ship without a rudder or a car with no brakes.
We are out of control, especially when we think we are in control.
How often I have found myself tight-gripped and self willing a proper behavior only to see myself gloating when I endure or groveling when I fail.
All our self-effort of righteousness leaves us bankrupt with pride.
The Holy Spirit enables us not to have to control circumstances or people.
We need not be thrown around without an anchor.
Our anchor of self-control is embedded in God.
He is the One who glories in living by His life and strength.
As you examine your life by the light of the Holy Spirit, ask to see the people, places, or circumstances you are trying to control in your strength.
Lord, may we, in our weakness, experience your strength and control of our lives. May we know the freedom of Your rule in our lives to express Your love through the way You've created us. Amen
