But the Law came to increase and expand [the awareness of] the trespass [by defining and unmasking sin]. But where sin increased, [God’s remarkable, gracious gift of] grace [His unmerited favor] has surpassed it and grew all the more, So that, [just] as sin has reigned in death, [so] grace (His unearned and undeserved favor) might also reign through righteousness (right standing with God) which issues in eternal life through Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) our Lord. Romans 5:20-21
Mercy clears the way for Grace to work. MBW
So then, the law was introduced into God’s plan to bring the reality of human sinfulness out of hiding.
And yet, wherever sin increased, there was more than enough of God’s grace to triumph!
And just as sin reigned through death, this sin-conquering grace will reign as king through righteousness, imparting eternal life through Jesus, our Lord and Messiah! Romans 5:20-21
Grace isn't what washes away our sins.
It is by the shedding of Christ's blood we receive forgiveness.
And it is through His death and resurrected life we become new creations.
All of this is because God's mercy triumphs over justice!
Grace is something else.
Grace is the power we are given to live in the victory that Jesus has already won.
No matter how powerful the temptation is, grace is more powerful.
"Grace is God’s willingness to use His power on your behalf to empower you to be someone you can never be on your own." Dan Mohler
God didn't just give us new life with a pep talk about how grateful we should be and then walk away, leaving us to strive in our power.
He does so much more.
He gives us Himself and His grace!
How have you confused the role of mercy and grace in your life?
Describe a time when God's grace empowered you to love someone considered unlovable.
Lord, may we be clear about Who you are and Your eternal life in us. Awaken us to Your power. Amen
