The eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is clear [spiritually perceptive, focused on God], your whole body is full of light [benefiting from God’s precepts]. But when it is bad [spiritually blind], your body also is full of darkness [devoid of God’s word]. Luke 11:34
Purity Of Motives
A fundamental characteristic of a spiritual leader is purity.
But, as you read, given our society and cultural experiences, it is easy to think of it in terms of sexual purity.
That is a given.
The purity of motives as followers of Jesus and leaders of others is non-negotiable.
Otherwise, who is doing the leading?
There are several excellent explanations and definitions in Greek for the word translated as clear or single.
If your eye is clear-single-simple-sound-perfect, without a secret double agenda, your body will be full of light for you and others.
Jesus speaks of a single-minded, single-purpose, knowing Him, His love, and becoming love to those we lead.
In order to follow Him:
Jesus did not say for us to decrease so He could increase.
He said to deny ourselves.
He never said to figure it out.
He said to pick up our cross because this road leads to death and victory.
He didn't say to incorporate Him into our daily life.
He has become our life.
So, as you journey, look forward to seeing the light in others that comes from your witness of Jesus and singleness of purpose.
In what ways do you struggle with knowing your motives?
What are other things that you demand to be pure?
Why is purity important in products?
Why is purity critical to loving well?
Pray: Thank You, Lord, for renewing our minds, clearing our eyes, filling us with Yourself, and allowing us to taste Your victory. We love You! Amen
