“Are you tired? Are you worn out and burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me, and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me, and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28-30 Message
Rhythms of Grace
"Rest in Him for the rest of your life."
"Come unto me, and I will give you rest."
Notice in the verse Jesus was speaking about those worn out with "religion" as it had been taught.
Do this, do that, don't do this, don't do that.
The problem was the teachers of His day were teaching a performance religion.
That is one based on a person's works to gain approval from God.
No wonder they were worn out!
If this is you, you should be worn out by trying to achieve something you cannot do on your own.
We cannot redeem ourselves.
We do not have 'enough' currency to buy our way out of the slavery we were born into.
Jesus works from the inside out.
Our coming to Him is our confession that we are not enough and cannot make ourselves enough to 'buy' into this freedom He is offering.
He paid the price and supplied the grace to keep us free.
In Him, we can learn the rhythms of grace He promises.
As we dance to His rhythms, we finally rest from our work because God Himself works in us to do and will of His good pleasure.
In what ways are you trying to achieve that which you can only receive from God?
Lord, open our ears to hear Your rhythms of grace for us. Please lead us into resting in Your finished works. May we not be found outside looking in when You want us to live in You. Amen
