He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” Genesis 3:11-13
The Blame Game
Blaming God is subtle and often profoundly hidden in the believer's life.
The Holy Spirit's searching light must reveal it.
We first encounter the Blame Game in the first chapters of Genesis.
Interestingly, either said outright or inferred, both Adam and Eve blamed God for their fall.
The result of not taking responsibility for our sins results in bitterness toward God.
Yes, when you read that, it sounds ridiculous to blame the very One who created you and can heal you, but we do!
In our current language, we would call this a victim’s mentality.
AKA “Not my fault.”
The bondage that keeps us from being healed is that we won’t take ownership of our part.
We are bound up in grave clothes, refusing to be unwound because it is not our fault.
Some examples:
Lord, I was trying to be a good and faithful servant, and they mistreated me. I thought You were supposed to protect me.
Lord, nobody understands me. I serve them for You, so look what I get.
Lord, every time I step out in faith, I get knocked back down; where are You when I need You?
As you think about your woundedness, in what ways have you directly or indirectly blamed God for your condition?
The Remedy
Take time today to confess (agree with what God says) the sin that has kept you in a victim’s mentality and blaming the One who has given you life. Thank Him from whom every good and perfect gift comes from heaven for your life.
Lord, how deceptive the enemy is in cloaking our circumstances and relationships by making it all about us. Bring Your light to reveal Your Word and Your goodness to us. Amen
