O my people, listen to my instructions. Open your ears to what I am saying; I will speak to you in a parable. I will teach you hidden lessons from our past—stories we have heard and known, stories our ancestors handed down to us.
We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and mighty wonders. He issued his laws to Jacob; he gave his instructions to Israel.
He commanded our ancestors to teach them to their children so the next generation might know them—even the children not yet born—and they, in turn, will teach their children. So, each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting his glorious miracles and obeying his commands. Psalm 78
The Long View
There have been many significant revivals in the history of Christendom.
Yet, I cannot find one that caused transformation for more than one generation.
Why?
They were focused on their generation.
We need to have the "long view" in sight.
That may sound strange coming from a sixty-six-year-old who has actuarially "less" road to travel, but I have this view because God has turned my heart to the 'next generations'!
Who in the generation after you can you walk with?
How might you start seeing the redemption and restoration of generation yet unborn?
Lord, may we recognize we are people who are journeying, a family, Your body. We are not carrying a baton to pass off to the next generation, but You've given us a torch lit by Your Holy Fire, which we light each generation's torch as we journey. Young and old, we are Your body You've chosen to express Your love to a lost and dying world. Amen
